Winter
Winter in Vesterålen
The northern lights appear with the advent of the dark season. Breathtakingly beautiful colours shimmer across the sky and create a bewitching atmosphere. Steep snow-covered mountains are reflected on the ocean surface, along with the sparkling colours from the heavens. Vesterålen has a certain amount of daylight, but no sun during the dark season. Despite this, the season is still enjoyed by those who appreciate winter and candlelight.

As in many other places in Norway, we have historic skiing traditions. With well prepared ski trails and ideal terrain, makes cross-country skiing one of winter’s greatest activities. Mountain formations are inviting and appeal to both experienced skiers and novices who want a winter trek to the peaks. Åndstadblåheia ski lift is open throughout the winter season. This is also the venue for «The Great Blue Hype»,- an annual Big Jump contest for snowboarders and skiers.
Another spectacular activity for the entire family is dog sledging. Tourists may choose whether they want to drive their own dog team or simply relax on the sledge and enjoy the landscape while a guide does the driving. You can mingle with reindeer and enjoy Sami culture in the company of your host Inga Sámi Siida. This is a popular winter activity for local residents as well; you can participate in reindeer herding and spend the night in a Sámi tent, the lávvo.
Take the whale safari in the realm of sea eagles and seals, and try your luck at fishing on the same trip. And if you like fishing, we also have many frozen lakes for ice fishing! Enjoy the arctic landscape from a kayak. You can hire kayaks and equipment year round. Finally, be sure to check the calendar of cultural events at www.vestreg.no/kulturkalender/
